Recognizing the Warning Signs: How to Support a Loved One in Severe Emotional Crisis
When an emotional crisis hits a family member, friend, or colleague, the people around them often feel helpless and terrified of saying the wrong thing. Suicide rates remain alarmingly high, making community awareness and early intervention life-saving skills.
At Lighthouse Counseling and Wellness, our crisis counseling framework centers on rapid emotional de-escalation, removing shame, and building immediate safety nets.
Shinning The Light and Igniting Hope
Watch for Key Warning Indicators: Dramatic mood swings, social withdrawal, giving away prized possessions, talking about being a burden to others, or expressing that ‘everyone would be better off without me’.
Ask the Direct Question with Compassion: Myth: Asking someone if they are thinking about suicide puts the idea in their head. Fact: Asking directly (‘Are you having thoughts of ending your life?’) provides immense relief, letting them know they can be honest.
Listen Without Rushing to Minimize: Avoid saying ‘You have so much to live for’ or ‘Cheer up’. Instead, say: ‘I hear how much agony you are carrying. Thank you for telling me. You don’t have to carry this alone.’
Remove Lethal Means and Construct a Safety Plan: Ensure they do not have access to harmful objects or medication. Keep emergency contacts written down.
A lighthouse shines brightest when the night is blackest. If someone you love is struggling, reach out to Lighthouse Counseling and Wellness for compassionate, ethical crisis support.
